Design for manufacturing

Design guide

Ten rules that keep sheet metal parts accurate and affordable. Use them before you release a drawing, or download the PDF for your team.

Fibre laser cutting head above a sheet
Rules of thumb for steel and stainless. Aluminium and thick plate are reviewed per part.
#RuleValueWhy
01Minimum flange length≥ 4 × tThe flange must span the V-die opening.
02Inner bend radius≈ 1 × tStandard tooling; tighter radii risk cracking.
03Hole to bend line≥ 2.5 × t + RHoles near bends deform into ovals.
04Bend reliefwidth ≥ t, depth ≥ R + tPrevents tearing at corners.
05Minimum hole Ø≥ t (SS ≥ 1.5 × t)Small holes in thick sheet lose roundness.
06Slot / web width≥ 1.5 × tThin webs warp from heat input.
07Press-in nut to edgeper fastener table, ≥ 2 × ØSheet needs material to flow into the nut.
08One radius per partsame R on all bendsFewer tool changes, more stable angles.
09Tolerances2768-m + functionalFine values only where they matter.

Bend profile with inner radius and flange lengthCross-section of a 90 degree bend showing material thickness t, inner radius and the minimum flange length of about four times t. flange ≥ 4 × ttR i ≈ 1.0 × thole edge ≥ 2.5 × t + R from bend

Files we can read

What to send

  • STEP (.step, .stp): a sheet metal body, not a mesh. One file per part or an assembly.
  • DXF: flat patterns for parts without bends, or with bend lines on a separate layer.
  • PDF drawing: tolerances, threads, finish, cosmetic faces, revision.
