Demonstration project – fictional school, place and figures
Vlietstad primary: a decant school for two years of renovation.
A fictional board of four primary schools renovates its largest building. 210 pupils need eight classrooms, a staff room and sanitary facilities on a nearby sports field – and the modules should not end up as waste afterwards.

- Programme
- 8 classrooms
- Modules
- 24
- Gross area
- ≈ 864 m²
- Contract
- Lease, 2 years
The question
Renovation could only start once every pupil had a classroom elsewhere.
The board had three conditions: classrooms ready before the summer holiday ends, an indoor climate comparable to the renovated school, and a clear answer to what happens with the building after two years.
A permanent-use energy level for a two-year term felt like overspending; a basic envelope felt like an emergency classroom. The discussion was about where the balance lies.
The programme
Schedule of rooms
| Classrooms | 8 × approx. 60 m² (16 modules) |
|---|---|
| Sanitary groups | 2 (1 per storey) |
| Staff room & office | 1 module |
| Stair cores | 2 (one per storey position) |
| Corridor & entrance | Within module depth + 3 modules |
| Storeys | 2 |
| Energy level | Enhanced (heat pump, balanced ventilation) |
| Permit route | Temporary permit |
Ground floor
Indicative plan
Four classrooms per floor, sanitary and technical room at the end, staff room next to the entrance.
Timeline
Weeks from go-ahead
Demonstration timeline. Real lead times depend on permit procedure, production slot and site conditions.
Choices made
Why the board chose this set-up
Enhanced energy level, even for two years
The pavilion would be reused afterwards, so the investment in envelope and ventilation carries over to the next site.
Two storeys on the sports field
Kept half the field in use for the neighbouring club and shortened the foundation works.
Lease with a relocation clause
Lease for two years, with the option for a second school of the same board to take over the modules.
Afterwards
Relocation scenario
In the scenario, 18 of the 24 modules move to a second school of the same board as a four-classroom extension with staff wing; the remaining modules return to the pool for refurbishment. This is a design scenario, not a reported result.
