Guide
Redesign your website without losing search visibility.
Most visibility lost in a redesign is lost through avoidable mistakes: missing redirects, removed content, a forgotten noindex. This checklist covers the six steps of a careful website migration, from inventory to monitoring after launch.

1. Take an inventory
Export every existing URL (sitemap, Search Console, analytics) and note which pages bring in visits, search traffic, links and enquiries. Those pages deserve the most care.
2. Decide what happens to each page
Does it stay, merge or go? Record it in a URL map: old URL, new URL, reason. Every removed or moved page needs a new destination that matches its content.
3. Set up permanent redirects
Each old URL should redirect with a 301 or 308 to the best new page, in one step, without chains. Don't send everything to the homepage; that helps neither visitors nor search engines.
4. Carry over titles, content and tracking
Keep what works: the titles, descriptions, headings, structured data and content of well-performing pages. Make sure tracking and conversions work from day one, with consent.
5. Test before launch
Check redirects, forms, speed, mobile display, canonical tags and indexing settings on a staging site. A forgotten 'noindex' can make an entire site invisible.
6. Monitor after launch
Submit the new sitemap, watch errors and impressions in Search Console, and compare enquiries with the period before. Fluctuations in the first weeks are normal; lasting drops need investigating.
What nobody can promise
No one can guarantee that rankings will be retained. A careful migration reduces the risk. If you'd like help, we handle this as part of a website redesign project.
